Someone who wants to come to one of my workshops has asked if there are any special precautions we need to take because he's epileptic. My first thought was that there shouldn't be, as I'm not planning to flash any strobe lights or even use an eye fixation induction. But I thought I'd post here and see if anyone has any firsthand experience using hypnosis with epileptics. (Not FOR epileptics, just with them.)

Thanks,

James

I ran across this article in respons to your question.
http://ezinearticles.com/?Who-Shouldnt-Be-Hypnotized---Are-You-Amon...
It's not advised to use it on a client with epilepsy, the article indicates that.

"Interestingly, Science Digest (online; Feb 15 2008 issue) describes a scenario at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital where they induce hypnosis specifically to determine whether a child's seizure-like movements are epileptic or non-epileptic. If hypnosis brings on the seizures, the child is considered epileptic.
If you have experienced what appear to be symptoms of epilepsy, and would like to use hypnosis, ask your doctor if it's okay before proceeding. Ideas about this may vary among the medical field, and it's important to get the opinion of someone both knowledgeable and trustworthy."
I hope that points you in the right direction...

There are no particular precautions that I can think off, appart from the usual things you would do to make anyone comfortable and safe in trance.

ie. have them in a chair that they are not likely to fall out of.
make sure there is nothing sharp, hard or breakable next to the chair.

If someone is on control drugs for epilepsy, then as long as they are taking their medication, I would treat them the same as any other client.

If they do not normally use drugs... I would treat them the same as any other client.

If any client has spontaneous movements in hypnosis, I would allow that to happen.

If any client has what appears like an epileptic seizure in hypnosis, I would treat it the same as if they had one in everyday life... do nothing other than make sure they are safe and comfortable. it will stop when the time is right.

possibly say words to the effect that it is ok, to let it happen, and that they are safe.

Hope this is helpful James.

Love and hugs,

Fable

I heard a Tad James CD talking about some news on the medical field that says that hypnosis make the epileptic seizure to seizure time longer; what I know is that, like Faber point, you hypnotize somebody and this person is having a epileptic episode, the wiser thing is keep him/her in hypnosis, where you can have more control over the situation.
Thanks,
Alfredo
