I have a passionate interest in seeing children off drugs and learning emotional responsibility for themselves. At young ages they are so frequently in the subconscious rhat I wonder why we aren't using hypnosis to help them deal with life issues and often the coping responses they formulate on their own to counter these issues. Even real medical situations from birth can be helped by teaching the child about the use of his or her own inner mind.

My years as a teacher often saw the use of 'inadvertent' hypnosis as a child listened to a story, became deeply involved in a sport or arts activitry, even passionately expressed his or herself. If these situations and the knowledge of learning styles had been grasped by the teacher [myself] what benefits could have come.

BUt I saw benefits anyhow - inadvertently: the behavioural kid whose behaviour was perfect in band class. the tantrum quelled when I sang Greensleeves, the Toutette' s syndome mangaed when the boy played in the percussion section.

Sadly my years as a Band teacher destroyed my hearing regarding children - but I remain interested in helping them any way I can.
So I invite others who are passionate about seeing children develop well and responsibly to 'chime in' with their stories and opinions.

I became interested in working with children after my son was diagnosed with ADHD. I have been practicing since 2005 and recently relocated to Anchorage, AK. I hope to build a thriving practice up here.

Hi All! I am a new member of the group and am glad it is here.
Recently I had a child of 8 years come to the office (with Mom) to seek relief from ealy morning wakenings and then some "night terror." Our first meeting went well. so well that the Mom went into trance. No so with the child. Progressive relaxation scripts for children that age just don't work, too much energy and too long in processing. So, next session I want to use the Elman method because it seems to be a lot faster and the child won't be as distracted. My question to the Group, is what do you think of my idea and do you know of better ways toi create the trance? This is the youngest child I have worked with and I am excited at the prospect of helping him. I need your help. Thanks in advance.

Hi Constance
Perhaps Melissa Roth could recommend a good pediatric hypnotherapist in the area. As said in the previous message - to help a child the whole family needs therapy. I don' t know if the family you speak of is doing this.
The child is obviously going through a great deal of emotional pain and the only way a hypnotist can be effective here is as a complement to the mental health worker. Try Melissa.

Hello Constance Kenney,

For some reason, I don't see your post here? But I am responding to this message: Regarding teen cutting. I am now in a situation where I desperately need to know if any of you could recommend a highly qualified Hypnotherapist in the Marietta, GA. area. This young 14yr. old girl is in crisis and needs help. She is under a psychologist's care and seeing a traditional therapist but her behavior is escalating. Please help me! I live in AZ and have no idea if there is a special hypnotherapist for this child. The parents have talked to the therapist about this and they would like to go ahead and pursue this avenue of treatment. Thank you so much, Constance

I have worked with cases like that with a great success, and you don't need to be a Psychologist, but you must work with a psychologist referral, so they can guide you with hypnotic suggestions... cutting is self injury, and people cut themselves for varies reasons. It is a psychological way of coping with pain as a result of a strong emotions... the reason they are doing it, is because they don't believe they can cope with it in any other way, and the good news, YES they can cope with it, with hypnotherapy...
self-injure sometimes have other mental health problems that contribute to their emotional tension, and that is why you must have a doctor referral, so you can communicate better with your client.

First session, building rapport, relaxation, self esteem and confidence, feel free to contact before each session... you will also have to make sure you have her persons consent, and have the teen to trust you, since it can be really deep...

I do help this issues long distance as well, but again I make sure sessions are recorded, and all agreement are signed, that goes with doctor is involved.

First session, learn about the girl, have them all sign the papers, and then tell them you cannot see after the first session unless you have a doctor referral… also very important to let them know, she will need at list 6 sessions commitment, and then you can review and see if she need more sessions or not…

Respectfully, Doreen Cohanim

Apparently, telling a child to close their eyes may not be a good idea.
And they may have learned it is a control phrase to say "i am not comfortable" just to get out of doing something.
And trying to hypnotize your own children may send you into a severe need of self-hypnosis and / or meditation.

Hello Constance
I just received your message. Firstly I'm afraid there is nothing you can do unless the psychiatrist is on board about hypnosis. Under no circumstances should you work on the 14 yr old without his or her guidance.

You are also dealing with an unstable young one who is a teen. This means that unless you have had psychological t training you may be the recipient of mood swings and faulty perceptions about yourself an what you are doing.

Sadly Prozac isn't the answer [in my opinion]. A lot of family change is required as well as building up the inner resources of the 14 year old. This is very difficult when you are a friend of the family.

Perhaps you can find another hypnotist trained in pediatric hypnosis. I believe it will be effective - after all if it works for anorexia and bulimia why not cutting?

I'm sorry that this message isn't more encouraging.

Hi, it's good to see a group like this. A large part of my career has been spent helping children and teenager with many behavioural and emotional difficulties predominantly in care homes from a wide variety of background with a wide variety of experiences and with a wide variety of issues. And doing this work in groups and 1-1, including teaching them a variety of hypnosis and NLP skills. And more recently also working closely with parents that are having parenting issues at home.

All the best

Dan

Michael, As can I. However, some techniques I was originally taught in class were specified for only pain of a non-medically assignable cause. Needless to say, I have also moved on since then. John
