Movie Reviews

Not as old as the written word, film is yet another wonderful medium - I invite you to recommend (add a Discussion) movies and documentaries which are in some way related (directly/indirectly) to hypnosis or the profession of hypnosis.

Addendum to group description:

The exploration and communication of ideas, the telling of stories, and the manifestation called Art, have for some years now come to us in the medium of “film” and more recently “digits”. You are invited to recommend (add a Discussion) movies, television episodes (which are wholly fictional or based on actual events), and documentaries which are in some way related (directly or indirectly) to hypnosis or the profession of hypnosis.

I will leave it up to you, but when recommending a fictional piece I will be very careful not to provide too much information regarding the relevance to hypnosis – sometimes the richness of the discovery is made possible when one enters with little expectation.

I also encourage you to involve yourself in the Book Reviews group.

Namaste,
(with reverence to you)
(love, integrity, wisdom, and peace)
Michael

Hi everyone I'm also a big movie fan and love the B movies. I worked at several Drive-in theater in my teens. This is not a plug but you can find a lot of the older B movies here http://www.sinistercinema.com/

Cool group! I'm big on movies, although the ones I watch are more and more not on the "just released" list but older films and foreign films. But I like some of the blockbusters too, I'll see if I can add some reviews here a little later on :)

I really love a "good" story. The more artistically it's told, the more pleasurable it is to watch. I also love movies that capture our humaness, and the true emotions of the human heart that we all experience, though only some we care to own.

I absolutely love movies. Recommendations for those with a common interest in hypnosis are easier to generate than to find actual movies dealing with the subject of hypnosis.

Recommendations:
What the Bleep do we Know?
Down the Rabbit Hole
Waking Life
The 5 people you meet in heaven
Meet Joe Black
The Matrix Trilogy
V for Vendetta
Slaughterhouse 5

Thanks for the invitation -- I'm happy to accept!

Malechi McCourt, in his book, Angela's Ashes, described the difficulties he was having in teaching literature to a class of New York City high school students. He eventually realized that much of the wisdom of contemporary culture is expressed through the medium of motion pictures, rather than through literature. He started teaching motion pictures instead of the classics, and the class quickly turned into a group of alert and attentive students instead of merely a collection of "attendance-law prisoners."

Speaking of prisoners, I currently teach a group entitled, "Psyching out the Movies," to prisoners in an in-patient psychiatric unit at New Jersey's supermax prison. These guys are definitely not the type to discuss Shakespeare as a means of understanding more about human nature. But we just got through seeing Sea Biscuit, which they enjoyed, and which we were able to use to illustrate a good many points about issues in contemporary culture. Last night, we began watching our second movie -- One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest! I'll try to write a review.

Thanks once more for the invitation!

Has anyone seen The Compass yet? I ordered and received it but haven't had time to watch it yet.

I"m not usually very analytical when it comes to movies. That is the time I turn my brain off and focus on enjoyment---passive entertainment.

Hello everyone, how is everyone today?

Michael, As can I. However, some techniques I was originally taught in class were specified for only pain of a non-medically assignable cause. Needless to say, I have also moved on since then. John
