I saw a woman for sleep paralysis last week. I reassured her that REM sleep paralysis is natural (nature of course doesn't want us dreaming with eyes open or acting out our dreams). REM sleep is also known as "paradoxical sleep" (because REM brain w…

I think all these comments are spot on but I also think there is a very basic mammalian/animal response to having the "orientation response" triggered by experiencing something disorienting (triggering an electrical spike in the brain known as PGO-w…

Certainly we need to decide with rather than for the client what changes they'd like to make first. Sometimes we might also need to manage expectations as when people expect all and everything to be instantly cured, I might talk in analogy about how…

Hi Raymond This figure is quoted here http://www.inforesearchlab.com/smokingdeaths.chtml the 7th bullet point down. This isn't where I originally found this stat but I'm startled to see: 'Tobacco use will kill 1 billion people in the 21st century i…

If someone wants to smoke that's fine by me but we can note that: 'The reasons they began to smoke may have been "unethical" i.e. peer pressure suggestibility and so forth. As Donna said suggestibility is active and embedded within the wider enviro…

How many hypotists to change a lightbulb? Why I guess it's "10....9,8,7 and 6...down to 5...and 4..."

Hi Steve I see hypnotherapy as primarily a way to split a person's core identity from the problem part. For instance from: "I am a smoker" to "I smoke" to "Smoking is separate from me" I basically see conversational hypnotic inductions as "double…

Hi I think one benefit of prescribing the symptom is that it takes pressure off the client (and therapist?) as with the classic sex counselling task of instructing a man experiencing impotence to lie naked with his lover but "not to get an errectio…

Hi Doreen I think this is right. "Low self esteemers" have a strong emotionally conditioned belief system surrounding their own self worth. It is the feeling part of a person that needs to alter before the thinking can change (at least where strong…

Hi Dan, Bruce and Joshua I run online courses based on this approach. Some of it was inspired by Alan Carr's "externalizing the problem" approach-redefining smoking as a parasite that doesn't really belong to the person and some from Sufi ideas abo…

Hi Fable Actually it I can see how what you suggest might appear to be the case-although I've never found it to be. By getting the body onside with the intentions of the person ("I really know I should stop") you pave the way for less conflict. Or…

Hi Dan I like to "split" the person. No not with a pick axe I mean focus on separating their body and unconscious processes from their consciousness (and I really think the whole of hypnosis has to do with splitting conscious from unconscious proce…

Hi Susan Women and men are different GENERALLY which, in my opinion makes for a more interesting world. I think the taboo that this is not the case has diminished partly through recent scientific work (much done by women like Deborah Tannen). Typi…

Hi Gloria Lol I think this may be one of those topics people rather shy away from (p c and all that). Having observed hundreds of men and women trainee hypnotherapists over a ten year period during sessions with the public I think (in general!! :)…

It seems amazing that there are hypnotherapists out there whose own "buttons" can so easily be pushed. We should all be more artful and respectful (after all as Susan said it's their time and they are paying for it) than to bluntly argue with a clie…

Hi Mark,

Thank you so very much. You don't know how very well-timed this message was for me (as I seem to have become the target of an attack again today...(Peeling the Dove). LOL.

I'm well thanks and hoping you are as well. I truly love the objectivity and gentleness you bring to this group (who sometimes needs it REALLY, REALLY badly...lol again).

What's In a Name I guess my main reason for avoiding this organization (I looked them over for a while) has been that they use both the words "clinical" and "hypnotherapy" in their name. I was on the NGH Special Committee that worked with the unio…
