Greetings,

I just attended the NGH Conference at the Royal Plaza Hotel in Marlborough,

I noticed how many obese hypnotists and smoking hypnotists were there. (I am neither)

I was outside the loby busting stones on a fellow hypnotist who was smoking a cigarette after just having hypnosis to quit. = )

We were suddenly approached by an NGH member with a "Dr." title on his badge >eyeroll<
who tried his best to shove his opinon about a smoking hypnotist down our throats. "How can you ever expect a client to trust you to help them stop smoking if YOU SMOKE YOURSELF??"

I politely suggested that as long as the client trusts the practitioner it shouldnt matter. He kept pressing on and on and on. The smoking hypnotist slinked off and I was left to chat with this wanker. It was live a live blog! Then he carried on pointing out how many overweight practitioners were there and how he couldnt imagine how they could be successful.

How would you handle a situation if a client pointed out what a mess you are and asked how you can help them?

I would send them off straight away. If they can't trust me then hypnosis sessions with me would be unsuccessful.

What would you do?

Hi Jana...

I'd love to help our patients. I've used hypnosis on myself during a root canal. I was never able to keep my mouth open for more than 30 seconds because it hurt my jaw so much.

The doctor uses equipment that has at least a 18 mm file on it.. 18 mm's is a lot for someone who can't even bite into a hot dog or sub.

My docs are snobs though. They don't validate hypnosis. As a matter of fact they didn't know about it until last week. And my boss asked me if I was going to "swing a pocket watch and put him to sleep."

So aggravating!

Other professionals bash hypnosis, too.

Question: If you don't know what something ISN'T how can you understand what it IS?

MaryJane,

I give my money to both my dentist and my periodontist. They both love me especially now that I've become the model patient. Up until a little over a year ago, I could not walk into their offices without having taken at least one valium. During procedures, the dentists or their assistants had to continually remind me to breathe and/or to relax my body which looked and felt like a board.

I decided to take some of that which my C.Ht. has taught me and adapt it to going into trance during dental procedures. It is fantastic. I can do what they need for me to do - open my mouth, turn my head, etc; I can indicate that I'm doing fine. and I no longer have the feeling that I need a massage immediately after leaving their offices.

Sounds like you might be in a position to help people like me who fear dental procedures and maybe,
have spent an inordinate amount of time in dental chairs (in my case - due to periodontal problems that are hereditary). If you can teach them ways to be more comfortable by using hypnosis, I have no doubt that they will be forever grateful to you.

How many of you go to a medical doctor who is over weight? My medical Dr has limp, why cant he fix his limp?. He has all the answers right?..why does he cough? cant he stop his own cough?...... NO he doesnt have all the answers.. that is why it is called a PRACTICE... a medical practice....a hypnosis practice....a law practice....shall I continue?.......there are so many dynamics to an issue, it is NOT ours to judge EVER. As a hypnotherapist and drug/alcohol counselor, I can only give you tools to add to your tool box of change, as for ME, my tool box does not hold the same tools........I have choices just as YOU do. ...I choose to smoke and I choose not to work on my weight issue.......I recently had a client that I took on a Tunnel into the Light journey.........he met Jesus, asked Jesus a question consisting of WHEN,.,,Jesus answered....WHEN IT IS TIME MY SON.....So to respond in kind to your post about those of us who are fat and or smokers etc ..........When it is OUR time, we will conquer those issues....(soft determinisim )....Keep the faith! ....Carol

Hi Mary Jane, hi everyone,

You have asked a question which I think has crossed all of our minds on several occasions. As therapists our job is to do our best to help the client to achieve what they want. Therefore we have to see it from the clients perspective, and not take offence at their views. It is our job to help to open their minds to different perspectives and opportunities; they have come to see us in the first place because they have a mental block - they do not think that they can lose weight or stop smoking without our help.

It is a fact that the majority of clients will expect us to prove how good we are at self control - most clients only think of hypnosis for smoking, weight and nail biting issues, and do not realise the range of symptoms with which we can help. It is my view therefore that it is very important for a therapist to "look the part", or be able to explain easily why they do not, for all of our clients. Surely if we are "best known" for help with stopping smoking or losing weight then these matters will be in the backs (or forefront) of all of our clients minds?

To me, our first duty is to the client, irrespective of how closed minded they may be. We have chosen to be hypnotherapists and we take money from our clients. To best do our job, we need to look the part. We know how human beings take in information subliminally from around us, and create pattern matches in the subconscious. Even if a client THINKS that they are not discriminating against a therapist who is overweight or who smokes, they probably will discriminate without meaning to do so...and this means that the therapist will not be doing as good a job as they could be doing.

Just my few pennies worth!

MaryJane,
You said it much more amicably than I, and I agree with you. Its not that people can't have a preference, or (in my opinion) mis-guided values, but as you presented in your blog here, its when they have the audacity to spout that stuff to your face that blows the cork, so to speak.

Janadra- Thank you for your feedback.

I'd like to point out to all reading this that many people think just because someone has white teeth or straight teeth that they have a healthy mouth....

Wrong!

Most adults are walking around with periodontitis and serious gum disease and aren't aware of it.

Additionally, I love when they don't want to spend the money on some periodontal therapy- but they can go on a 3 day cruise. Or they have tons of bling bling, a nice car, a boat, health club, manicures, etc... but they complain when they have to pay for the most important thing attached to them. Their mouths!

I use to be very heavy 350 pounds or more (check my photo page) When people would ask me why don't I use hypnosis for weight loss I would tell them I was not ready to lose the weight. My weight helped me in one way. People understood that they had to be willing to change their habits and I could not force then to do anything. Point out that doctors smoke and ask them to try not to pre-judge you. When I performed I would get my weight out of the way by making a joke about it at the start of my shows.

"...my policy is that I don't hypnotize ignorant assholes." John Cleesattel

Not the image I have of myself or (I think) not the image most people have of me.
..if you talk like this to people you go see for help... you might be surprised at what image you have with them
AND I would not trust an overweight hypnotist for my weight loss issue or a hypnotist who was a smoker for my issue with smoking.
..that is entirely you prerogative, I would just not recommend verbalizing the fact to them unless your glass house can stand the hail of stones"
AND I am the client who pays for your services. Without me (and of course many, many other people), you have no business."
There are things that money won't buy...Somehow, I think I'll get by just fine without having to put up with those who follow your subjective philosophy, those many, many other people like you, you can count on the fingers of one hand. Personal habits or appearance seldom reflect the knowledge, ability, or talent of the individual, (Ask Susan Boyle) and those mile wide and inch deep people that judge by that kind of criteria can seek those of similar ilk for help with their many, many problems, for I will say the same thing to their face if they have the sheer gall to talk to me like that.

I am still overweight, but people come to me for weight loss. I think there are two reasons for this--first, I can tell them about the success I have had so far. I can point it out on my belt. Second, they feel more rapport with me than they would for someone who has never struggled with obesity.
